Johnson Partners
Stewardship. Execution. Performance.
Stewardship. Execution. Performance.
MY CORE DRIVERS:
Three (3) fundamental aspects drive my engagement: People, Relationships and Trust.
MY FOCUS:
To assist individuals, families, single family offices and trusted private wealth professionals in the protection, utilization and growth of wealth for current use, future vitality and longevity.
MY OBJECTIVE:
Helping Achieve Performance = Tangible Results + Client Desired Outcomes.
THE REQUIREMENT:
“STEWARDSHIP” is MANDATORY.
In today’s world, sizable wealth and substantial assets, whether created by entrepreneurial activities or inherited, bring complexities requiring more than "conventional wealth management". “Managing assets” is not enough, "STEWARDSHIP" must be THE guiding principle.
"STEWARDSHIP" requires different thinking + different actions.
The conventional path often leads to complacency, greater risk and under-performance.
The process of executing "stewardship" fosters inspiration, innovation and creativity, that catalyzes different thinking + different actions that eliminate rhetoric to form the consistent execution that positions an individual, family and an advisor to be as equally prepared for the day-to-day issues as they are for the challenges, adversities and threats that are certain not only in life but unquestionably in the protection, preservation, performance and perpetuity of wealth.
I believe the “stewardship of wealth” surfaces complex, highly personal issues that are inherently unique to each individual and family involving idiosyncratic preferences, priorities and constraints. This demands efficient and effective collaboration with trusted advisors and complementary specialists an individual or family may employ, which is why I hold five (5) core beliefs:
"Education before Execution"
"Prescription before diagnosis is malpractice".
“Seek to understand before seeking to be understood”.
NEVER “sell” rather be “of service”.
"Complexity demands collaboration".
As such, essential to my relationships and participation in "Stewardship" is CANDOR.
CANDOR: Speaking Clearly, Plainly & Simply. Just "Telling it like it is".
With CANDOR, problems are identified quicker, solutions achieved faster and executed better.
CANDOR prevents wasted time, effort and resources. Lack of candor is a killer to achieving results.
Candor fosters clear communication and accountability, which enables efficient development of bespoke, client-driven high-efficacy solutions with consistent high-level execution.
As a process, I engage in a progression of "candid conversations" to attain understanding of what’s truly important to an individual, family or an advisor and how that forms a distinctive worldview expressed within assets and wealth. This enables discernment of "relationship fit".
My Conviction: The BEST decisions result from education and candid conversations with careful consideration to meet the challenges of a fast-changing, capricious and volatile financial markets.
30+ years of "hands-on" experience working with individuals and families provides the perspective that assets and wealth often span generations to include long-standing operating companies and traditional asset classes (equities, fixed income, real estate and natural resources) as well as unique assets (antiquities, art, wine, numismatics, automobiles and more recently, digital assets).
The vitality of a family is often a result of continual entrepreneurial activity, such as launching new ventures, private investing, liquidity events and initial public offerings (IPOs). These actions have significant implications and impact on portfolio management, asset allocation, wealth creation, wealth preservation, asset protection, philanthropy and tax minimization. To that end, my experience, expertise, skills and relationships within each of those areas is a core competency.
With respect to "alternative investing" and "private market" opportunities, whether on a direct, pooled or product basis, employing a "principal mindset" is crucial. Far too frequently, individuals and families as well as advisors are inundated by "pitches" from salespeople and organizations who are "highly conflicted". Moreover, many of these "opportunities" are proprietary in nature and merely "best-of-platform". Candidly, the proliferation of "alternative and private market investing" has made the manager or product evaluation process crowded, confusing and complex, which increases the difficulty identifying the "best-in-class" or "best-of-breed".
The conflating of "popularity" (brand) and "performance" is significant in alternative investing.
With that said, a crucial aspect of alternative and private investing is "performance dispersion": The differential in returns of top-quartile managers/sponsors vs bottom performers is considerable. To illustrate: According to the Global Fund Performance Report from Pitchbook, in Private Equity, there was a 17.27% difference between top and bottom quartile vehicles with 2005-18 vintages—the largest gap between the top and bottom performers of any asset class other than Venture Capital.
As such, my focus is identifying asset managers who are "properly-aligned" and "best-in-class". Such individuals and firms are often largely unknown and not accessible via "platforms". However, they are rigorously "due diligenced and deeply-experienced" in well-defined niche areas of the capital markets with extensive qualitative and quantitative track records.
A key factor to success in my working relationships with individuals and families as well as advisors is my practical frontline experience in "knowing" the complexities of stewardship go far beyond financial and investment acumen but extend to qualitative aspects of intra-family, inter-personal and generational issues that surface sensitive issues about "purpose and meaning" requiring distinctly different but equally attentive and thoughtful processes as well-executed as those focused on investment performance.
My constant singular objective:
PERFORMANCE = TANGIBLE RESULTS + CLIENT DESIRED OUTCOMES.
STEWARDSHIP. EXECUTION. PERFORMANCE.
When these three (3) essential components are stringently, consistently and appropriately combined, the result is an unparalleled level of clarity, confidence and conviction about the necessary actions for an individual, family or family office along with their trusted professionals to achieve the perpetuity of wealth and establishment of legacy that has distinction and longevity.
WELCOME TO JOHNSON PARTNERS

30+ years experience in the capital markets with a specialization in alternative investing as an investor, advisor & expert witness.

My singular focus and greatest privilege:
Assisting stringently demanding individuals, families, family offices and private wealth professionals
to optimize process execution and tangibly achieve results for four (4) mission critical objectives:
The holistic protection, preservation, performance and perpetuity of wealth and assets.

Crucial in the "Stewardship of Wealth" are three (3) fundamental aspects: People, Relationships and Trust.
These three components in tandem with my five (5) core beliefs are stringently adhered to and executed "step-by-step" & "day-by day".
1. "Education before execution".
2. "Prescription before diagnosis is malpractice".
3. "Seek to understand before seeking to be understood".
4. NEVER “sell” rather be “of service”.
5. "Complexity demands collaboration".

My history reflects a culture of service. This enables discernment of the unique needs and stringent demands of individuals and families who have lives and lifestyles that bring greater complexity requiring the highest candor, clear communication and collaborative trust.
I have no menu of products or services.
The holistic needs and requirements of highly selective individuals and families with inherent uniqueness do not fit into neat "boxes" or conform to the standard menu of "wealth management". Moreover, "Stewardship" necessitates being anticipatory, "at the ready" i.e. ALWAYS optimally equipped to be "of service".
As such, I persistently cultivate and nurture "trusted" relationships with experienced professionals who are "best-in-class" and "properly aligned without conflicts of interest" to economically, efficiently and expediently assist in solving unique problems across the entirety of lives, lifestyle and generations, which optimally positions truly collaborative and complementary partnerships that can capture distinctive opportunities for desired outcomes and tangible results.
Proper alignment + eliminating conflicts is essential.
At Johnson Partners, EVERY day I strive to deliver the exceptional by utilizing my experience, expertise, skills and relationships to assist individuals, families, family offices and select private wealth professionals in achieving THEIR goals.
My process is highly-personalized with THE #1 core belief: “Education Before Execution”.
The stewardship of sizable assets and wealth is complex in and of itself. Moreover, the dynamics of family and generational issues along with life issues and lifestyle considerations require acute sensitivity. When alternative investments and private market opportunities are considered or added to the mix, the complexity increases considerably, if not exponentially.
There's an almost insatiable desire for alternative investments and private market opportunities. As a result, a tsunami of "product" is engulfing individuals, families, family offices and private wealth advisors, directly by managers or via "third-party platforms" such as iCapital or CAIS.
The “hype” is significant but many individuals, families, family offices and private wealth advisors may not be prepared. The operational requirements of alternatives and non-traditional investments can be significant. Additionally, inadequate due diligence and poor execution has a material impact on investment performance within alternatives and private markets. Historical data shows that performance dispersion among alternative managers is far wider than in public markets. In a study comparing returns of public market active managers to alternative managers - private equity, private debt, real estate, and hedge funds - the results were striking. The average return spread between top-and bottom-quartile public market managers was 1.5%. The spread widened to 10% for alternative managers, with private equity showing the greatest dispersion at 19%.
As alternative investing and private market opportunities proliferate, I believe the BEST and most appropriate, suitable decisions as to implementation and execution result from education and candid conversations that enable careful consideration to meet the challenges of a fast-changing and capricious world with dynamic and volatile financial markets.
To that end and as a component to being "of service", I provide carefully curated "invitation-only" private educational sessions facilitated by well-vetted, experienced domain experts.
The sole objective of each session is to provide the actionable intelligence that addresses issues relevant to individuals, families, single family offices and professionals serving private wealth who have exposure or may have interest in alternative asset classes (VC, PE, PC, HF + Crypto) and direct private market investing.
Sessions are in webinar or intimate in-person individual or small group (3-5 participants) format.
Private individual and small group "in-person" sessions have been held in: Austin, Dallas, Ft. Worth, Houston, San Antonio, Kansas City, Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Minneapolis, Atlanta, Miami, Tampa, Naples (Fla), Birmingham (AL), Memphis, Nashville, Charlotte, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., New York City, Denver, Seattle, San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Past Topics:
NOTE: All sessions fall under my core belief: NEVER “sell” rather be “of service”.
The sessions are educational resources for individuals, families, family offices and private wealth professionals to receive objective insights, experienced intelligence and best practices that foster more informed decisions to optimize process implementation and execution.
Among the highly-valued tangible outcomes of the sessions: The sharing of ideas, pooling of knowledge, networking with true peers and the building of solid relationships.
Importantly, "sales solicitations" and "marketing products or services" are strictly prohibited.
Attendance and participation by all is "complimentary": I nor my firm do not receive or accept "presentation or participation fees" from domain experts and their firms. Also, should a domain expert or firm be engaged by any participant individuals, families, family offices or private wealth professionals, I do not accept ANY compensation. Candidly, the receipt of compensation would create the exact conflicts I rigorously seek to eliminate.
Furthermore, domain experts participate in strict adherence to the "Chatham House Rule". This enables a trusted environment to discuss complex problems with robust Q&A that can at times go beyond a purely financial/investment focus to those of a more personal nature.
For individuals, families, family offices or advisors that wish to be informed about upcoming small group sessions or would like to discuss individual private sessions, contact me.
